Job Overview:

Athena is seeking an experienced Senior Ecologist to take a leadership role within our environmental team. This position offers the opportunity to lead meaningful ecological work, shape project outcomes, and contribute to high-impact infrastructure and environmental projects.

You’ll oversee ecological assessments, guide permitting strategies, and serve as a trusted advisor to clients—while mentoring the next generation of environmental professionals.

What You’ll Do

Lead with Expertise

  • Provide technical leadership for wetland delineations, stream assessments, habitat evaluations, and threatened & endangered species surveys

  • Serve as a task lead on complex and multidisciplinary projects

  • Prepare and review ecological reports, permitting documents, and agency submittals

  • Support NEPA documentation, including Environmental Assessments

Drive Regulatory Strategy

  • Coordinate directly with agencies such as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service

  • Lead Clean Water Act permitting efforts (Sections 401/404), with additional support for Section 10 as needed

  • Advise clients on compliance strategies and mitigation solutions

Make an Impact Beyond the Field

  • Manage project budgets, schedules, and deliverables

  • Build strong client relationships as a trusted technical lead

  • Support proposals and help grow Athena’s ecological services

  • Mentor and develop junior staff, shaping the future of the team

What You Bring

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Ecology, Environmental Science, Biology, or related field (Master’s preferred)

  • 8+ years of environmental consulting experience

  • Proven expertise in wetland delineations and stream assessments

  • Strong knowledge of the Clean Water Act and permitting processes (Sections 401/404 and Section 10)

  • Experience preparing technical reports and regulatory documentation

  • Ability to conduct fieldwork in varying conditions

  • Valid driver’s license

Nice to Have

  • Tennessee Qualified Hydrologic Professional (QHP) certification

  • Professional Wetland Scientist (PWS) or similar credential

  • Stream restoration experience or related certifications

  • Experience with compensatory mitigation and mitigation banking

  • Familiarity with regional/state regulations and agency coordination

  • Established relationships with regulatory agencies
